How he got here...

Sunday, August 18, 2013:
I was pretty much done being pregnant at this point.  I had been for a couple weeks and just wanted to hold my baby boy in my arms.  My doctor had manually dilated me at my last two appointments so I was ready to make progress on my own!  So Ricky, my mom and I went for a 3 hour tour of the Inner Harbor in hopes to make some progress.  It was gorgeous that day and Ricky was able to get some last minute (literally) photos of me and my pregnant self before Eric's arrival.

See, I was huge and fully cooked!!

Monday, August 19, 2013:
My last appointment before my due date...I was hoping to have made some progress since the 3 hour tour.  And sure enough I was 3 cm and 75% effaced!  We talked and she said she could induce the next day (my due date) or schedule an induction for the 24th.  So we scheduled for the 24th at 5:45 in the morning.  I finally had an end in sight and was ecstatic! Unfortunately, I was hoping to go into labor on my own since I didn't want the pitocin and other junk.  But there was a light at the end of the tunnel if he didn't come on his own.  That night I went to bed hoping to go into labor sometime very soon!

Tuesday, August 20, 2013, 2:30 a.m.:
I woke up a little crampy and feeling iffy.  I played it off as just Braxton Hicks and tried to go back to sleep but I was up every half hour with these cramps.  At 4:30 a.m. I got out of bed to go to the bathroom and sure enough, bloody show! I woke up Ricky and said "I think we need to call the doctor!"
So I called the on-call doctor and she said to come in to get checked just in case.  It was time! I just knew it!

6:00 a.m.
We arrived at the OB lobby, contractions about every 10 minutes lasting only about 30 seconds.  They were still kind of irregular but I was feeling it.  We registered and I was taken to triage to get checked.  Still only 3 cm and about 90% effaced.  We were in triage for about an hour and when the doctor came in, she told me to go for a walk around the hospital for a couple hours to see if I could make progress on my own (we were going for as natural as possible until I couldn't take it anymore).  By now, my mom had arrived and Ricky's parents were on their way to B'more.

7:00 a.m.
So we strolled (slowly) around the hospital and to the cafe where Ricky and my mom ate delicious food that I wasn't allowed to have (thanks guys!) even though I did sneak a tiny piece of bacon.  I drank my apple juice and walked around the cafe and the contractions were starting to get stronger.  Not more frequent but definitely stronger.  So 8:30 rolled around and we started walking again, heading towards OB.  I'm just guessing, but the walk back put me into full on labor!  The contractions were super strong and coming quicker and longer.  I had to stop along the halls and people looked at me (jerks, I'm in labor!).  We were closer to OB and I had one huge contraction that was really bad and I started crying.  Thank god we were close to OB because another one hit and I was done.  I wanted some kind of drug to make this pain stop and pronto!

9:00 a.m. (ish)
Back in triage, the nurse and a PA came to discuss my pain management options.  I could do some drug that started with an S or get the epidural.  The S drug wouldn't take away all the pain and wouldn't last long so I opted for the epidural.  I was still only about 4 or 5 cm dilated and 90% effaced but I was admitted and it was go time!

Morning into afternoon:
I really don't remember much of the afternoon except Game Show Network and nurses and doctors checking on me for pain management and progress.  I do know that the epidural was glorious (getting it wasn't) and I couldn't feel a thing.  My right leg was completely numb and I was shivering uncontrollably (even tho I wasn't cold at all), but I wasn't in pain and that's all that mattered at that point.  Ricky's parents arrived around 12:30 and people went to eat lunch, I ate a popsicle, watched some game shows and waited to be told to push.

Around 6 p.m.:
The doctor came in to check me and I was at 9 cm and 10 cm with contractions.  So they put me in the indian position to get Eric to drop down into the birth canal a little better since he was still at 0 station.  Then at 6:20, I started pushing.  I pushed for a while and not much was happening since I apparently wasn't pushing like I had to poop.  So I tried again and this time I had it.  I was pushing right and waiting for the team to come in to deliver him.  But they never did.

About 2 hours into pushing:
I was pushing for about 2 hours and Dr. Hunter came in and said I wasn't making push progress.  Eric's head was pretty big and his shoulders weren't coming through my small pelvis.  My pushing was basically for nothing because with every push, he would just go back up the birth canal.  So she gave me options: forceps with some risks to him and me, or C-section.  I wasn't about to give up and I told her neither.  I wanted to keep trying and so I did.  I pushed for a total of just over 3 hours.  The whole time, my acid reflux was horrible and I was downing water with every break.  Well, the doctor and nurses were great cheerleaders and my mom and Ricky were great!  I tried so hard and used the mirror to see Eric's head, but he just wasn't coming out.  But I was determined!  Until all that water turned against me.  I vomited all over the nurses (just water and my orange popsicle) and gave up.  I wanted so badly to do it on my own, but I just couldn't anymore.  So we decided on the C-section.  It was safe for me and Eric and I was okay with the decision.  Dr. Hunter was super proud of me for trying so hard and so long, but was glad I made the decision to do the C-section.

Around 9:15 p.m.: (not 100% on the time; I was being prepped for the OR and kind of delirious)
Ricky and my mom were given scrubs and I was prepped for the OR for the C-section.  In the OR, I remember being laid on the table with my arms stretched out and my shivering was the worst yet.  It sounded like I was punching the table, I was shaking so hard.  The anesthesiologist explained everything to me as it was happening and Ricky and my mom were right there with me.  Ricky was so nervous for me and watched the whole procedure (he's brave, I would've fainted).  I felt mostly tugging and pressure and at 10:01 p.m., he was here!  I heard Dr. Hunter yell out, "we have a cone head!" and laughed.  They took him to his clean-up spot and I told Ricky to go see him.  Ricky didn't want to leave me, but I told him to go anyway and he got to cut the cord and watch him get weighed and cleaned up. I watched through a mirror that the anesthesiologist put behind my head and I was crying the whole time.  He was so beautiful and perfectly pink.  Ricky brought him over briefly so I could see him and then I was whisked away to recovery (the part I don't remember at all).

Recovery:
I woke up and Ricky and my mom were with me and a nurse had laid Eric on my chest for his first feeding.  It was so surreal.  I don't remember too much except him on my chest, but he was there for about 2 hours before we were moved to our room and he got his first bath with Ricky.

Overall, my labor and delivery was flawless.  The pushing for 3 hours could've been a little condensed, but I'm glad I tried.  I have no regrets and am so happy with how everything went.  All my nurses were so amazing our entire stay and the hospital was amazing.

Now, we're home with our sweet baby and happier than ever.  So begins the journey of parenthood and our sweet little family...

39 weeks...

We went to the harbor this weekend and Ricky brought his camera along.  These are probably the last pics you will see before Eric is in them too!  Enjoy!  I will do a 40 week post if time allows.  I could go into labor any day now so we shall see!

how far along? 39 weeks and 6 days.

size of baby? Head down, about 20 inches long, a little less than 7 pounds (estimated).

heartbeat? right around 130 bpm

total weight gain/loss? right around 37 pounds, I gained 7 pounds this week.  Don't know how but I did!

maternity clothes? yes, yes and yes and loving those dresses!

stretch marks? got a few on my under-belly....ugh!

rings on/off? off and I miss them a lot!

innie or outtie? total outtie!

sleep? doing okay, just getting up to pee. Restless legs aren't too bad.  Switching sides is not easy anymore so I try to stick to one and deal with it.

best moment this week? Had a nice weekend with mama and Ricky.  Walked at the harbor for 3 hours.  This morning at my appointment, I hit 3 cm and 75% effaced.  We scheduled my induction for Saturday at 5:45 am so we will have a baby by this weekend!!! yay!!!!!

movement? he is moving around still but slower and harder.  He doesn't have much room in there anymore! And he's sticking to one side.

food cravings? sticking with ice cold anything, especially ice itself!!

gender? Little man Eric!

how are you feeling? I'm done being pregnant.  Moving around is not easy at all.  Can't sit or stand for too long and when I switch, it's not easy! I am so anxious to get this over and done with and have my little boy in my arms!

what i miss: sleeping on my stomach, falling asleep quickly, spaghetti and being able to walk up steps without taking a break halfway up!

37 and 38 weeks...

Eric hit full term last week and we're ready to go! I'll be doing a nursery post this weekend once I get a few more things hung up on the wall.  Stay tuned and stay near your phones! D-Day could happen at any moment!

how far along? 38 weeks and 3 days.

size of baby? Head down, about 20 inches long, a little less than 7 pounds (estimated).

innie or outtie? total outtie!

sleep? doing okay, just getting up to pee. Falling asleep isn't easy cuz of restless legs.  I have been taking naps this week, like long naps (3 and 4 hours).  I read a few things that some women get flu-like symptoms and sleep a lot right before labor kicks in...I hope I'm one of those women!

best moment this week? On Monday, my doctor made me 1 cm and told me I won't be going past the 27th.  Ricky thinks he'll show up on the 14th and others are saying the 18th and 21st.  I hope Ricky is right! ;)

movement? he is moving around still but slower and harder.  He doesn't have much room in there anymore!

food cravings? sticking with ice cold anything, especially ice itself!!  And cream soda for the past week, too!

gender? Little man Eric!

how are you feeling? I'm done being pregnant.  I'm uncomfortable, sore all over, can't move fast at all, get winded and just want to hold my baby boy! I am so anxious to get this over and done with and have my little boy in my arms!

what i miss: sleeping on my stomach, falling asleep quickly, spaghetti and being able to walk up steps without taking a break halfway up!

what i'm looking forward to: Only about 11 days to go and we finally get to meet our sweet baby boy!!!

36 weeks...

how far along? 36 weeks and 6 days.

size of baby? Doctor said he is head down, about 19 inches long and around 6 pounds.  The ultrasound pic wasn't so great, since he wasn't very cooperative (again!).

heartbeat? right around 145 bpm

total weight gain/loss? right around 30 pounds.

maternity clothes? yes, yes and yes and loving those dresses!

stretch marks? got a few on my under-belly....ugh!

rings on/off? off and I miss them a lot!

sleep? doing okay, just getting up to pee.

best moment this week? 1.  Officially moving out of our apartment and turning in the keys!  2. The ultrasound on Monday was great! I love seeing him.  It wasn't a great session because his face is right up against my uterus, but he is still absolutely adorable! I can't believe I only have about 3 and 1/2 weeks to go! Eek!

movement? he is moving around still but slower and harder.  He doesn't have much room in there anymore!

food cravings? sticking with ice cold anything, especially ice itself!!

gender? Little man Eric!

how are you feeling? still getting rid of this darn cold, but feeling okay otherwise.  I can't do too much of anything cuz I get winded very easily, so I'm taking it easy!

35 weeks (and 34 too!)...

So during week 34, we were mid-move, elbow-deep in boxes and junk! Sorry no post for 34 weeks, but I'll summarize: big, hot, sweaty, sticky and excited!

how far along? 35 weeks and 5 days.

size of baby? about 18 inches long (head to toe) and about 5 pounds (quite the little porker!)!

heartbeat? nurse said in the 130's so it's good!

total weight gain/loss? right around 27 pounds.

maternity clothes? yes, yes and yes and loving those dresses!

stretch marks? I have found 2 so far so cocoa butter every night!

rings on/off? off and I miss them a lot!

innie or outtie? total outtie!

sleep? doing okay.

best moment this week? moved into our new house! It was a hot day for everyone, but well worth it! Still have some stuff to get done and brought over from the apartment but it feels great to call this new place "home!"

movement? the moving is getting more and more uncomfortable.  He must be big in there because he's kicking and punching pretty hard now!  And he has definitely dropped.  Maybe not the whole way, but definitely a lot!
food cravings? sticking with ice cold anything, especially ice itself!!

gender? Little man Eric!

how are you feeling? caught myself a little cold, so I'm trying to knock that out (I am taking a 6-day course through the county and I have been in an elementary school during summer school hours, so I guarantee I caught it there.  ugh!) Other than that, pretty good!

what i miss: Mainly just sleeping on my stomach, chocolate, ketchup and spaghetti and meatballs.

what i'm looking forward to: Getting Eric's nursery put together and I can't wait to meet him!! SO VERY EXCITED!!!

Dear Eric,

Hi sweet baby.  This is Mommy!  As I sit here and write this letter to you, you are moving all around in my belly, your first little home before you enter a strange, new world.  Mommy and Daddy are doing our very best to make you a beautiful home to be welcomed into and are so excited for your arrival!

I can't wait to hold you in my arms for the first time and see your beautiful face.
I can't wait to see if you got Mommy's chin and Daddy's nose.
I can't wait to see all your adorable personality traits and what you pick up from Mommy and Daddy (let's hope you don't get Mommy's laugh, but I hope you get Daddy's sense of humor!)
I can't wait for you to meet your grandparents and uncles.  They love you so much already!

These past 8 months or so have been very interesting! From finding out you were on your way to us, to seeing you on the ultrasound for the first time, to hearing your heartbeat for the first time, to feeling you move for the first time; these were all your very first first's!  And there are so many more to come.  Your first bath, your first tooth, your first time crawling and walking, your first time on the potty, your first day of kindergarten...wait, I'm getting way ahead of myself.  But Mommy and Daddy can't wait to experience all of these with you!

So many people have told me along the way all the wonderful parts of having you inside my belly and they were very right.  It is like no other feeling in the world.  Sure I might be a little tired and achy, but it's worth it when I feel you kick a little or do a somersault in there.  I know that YOU are the end result and I am beyond excited and thrilled to get to meet you so very soon!

I love you, Eric!
See you soon!

Love,
Mommy
